As Summer 2019 fades to black, we look forward to introducing some new elements, trends and colours into our design thinking. Here’s a quick look at some of the trends inspiring us as we enter the winter months.
A great retro fabric, loopy, wool bouclé is showing up on all sorts of upholstered pieces from poufs to grand sectionals. We love the texture and warmth it adds to a space – so perfect and cozy for the winter months.
In 2019, incorporating houseplants and cacti into the home were arguably the biggest décor trend. For fall, we see strong, palm motifs decorating walls, accessories and furniture. We love the elegant silhouette and how palm imagery is still able to add an element of nature into the interior without having to fully commit to incorporating live plants into the household!
More and more curved sofas are filling spaces and we are noticing a distinctive move away from low profile furniture. These curvy, non-traditional sofa shapes are perfectly designed for conversation attracting us to their innovative design and fostering interaction in the process.
There is a continued focus on the relationship between humankind and nature. Natural, organic materials–such as wood floors, stone, daylight and plant life are figuring prominently. 2019 will be the year it steps into many homes decor. Crisp and clean, cement too is being featured beyond floors and countertops. These rugged materials are being shaped and used in soft, sensual shapes that evoke serenity and/or remind us of our relationship with nature.
There is also a noticeable nostalgia for artisanal processes, skills and craftsmanship from the past. Custom millwork and other crafted materials are in demand. In addition to custom cabinetry and built-ins, herringbone floors are popular again as are wood ceilings. Boho macrame touches and larger scale tapestries are trending adding a distinctive 70’s vibe to many spaces and balancing cooler elements like stone and concrete.
An extension of the trend to incorporate natural elements, there is a dedicated interest in artisanal products for the home. We are seeing
floral wall coverings depicting both bold and intricate floral pattterns in either subtle or vibrant hues.
On this same note, soft feminine tones of blush, dusty pink, and bronze are being used for walls and as a way to break up expanses of taupe or neutrals. They evoke calm and elegance without being overtly ‘romantic’.
Jewel tones (shades of grey fading fast but Pacific Northwest will not abandon) and burnt yellow are figuring prominently. Colours that seemed too bright before are making a statement now. As winter approaches, why not opt for bolder and better? A punch of colour exudes happiness, confidence, and cheer!
New technologies have made matte finishes all the more alluring and viable. Compared to the dramatic effect that high-shine finishes offer, matte finishes lend furnishings and accents a more relaxed, futuristic appeal. Chalky paint finishes are also popular, adding the same muted feel to walls.
